Hi -

I was wondering if anyone has done some head to head comparison shots of the Canon 24-70/2.8L against the Contax 24-85. I'm very interested in getting one of these if it makes sense.

I have been basically happy with the Canon 24-70 thus far, but after what I consider to be a very disappointing new 16-35 II, I am miffed with Canon and wanting to branch out more. I already have a Leica 50mm (3 of them actually), so I'm not totally new to this area, but getting a Contax N would be an entirely new level for me obviously Smile

My biggest dislike with the Canon 24~70/2.8L was its size/weight. At the wide end, it was one long beast. The Contax 24~85-N is one nice compact sweet little deal.

It's Been Awhile Since I Used The 24-70 (Friends)
But I Was Never Really Impressed... The Again, Till I Bought My "N's" I Was Prime Blind.
The Resolution, Color, Contrast, And That "Zeiss Look" Are Fantastic.

Just A Few Test Shots Taken Yesterday With My 24-85 ...
And I Am Very Happy. I Did Not Buy This For "Wide-Open" Shots...
I Have Fast Primes, For That Style Of Photography... Though I Found It Very Good, The Few I Took...

I sold my 24-70 after I got the 24-85 N converted.

The first few test shots with the 24-85N were enough for me to know I would never shoot with the 24-70L again. The image quality is simply amazing. The Zeiss colors are superb and the images are sharp even at wide open aperture. The canon was quite sharp and held reds (among others) well, but Zeiss was a whole lot better.

Then there's the size and weight. The 24-70L is just too big for a lens of that focal length. The N is much easier to carry and feels a bit lighter.

But the bottom line is the Zeiss look that Canon can only aspire to.

FWIW, my copy of the 24-85 will be reviewed by photozone.de once it's here. Note though, that photozone hasn't started full frame testing yet, so the review will most likely be done with a Rebel XT.

Could someone take the same picture with both the Zeiss and the Canon lenses and post a comparison picture including 100% crops? That is if you think the difference is visible on a computer monitor. Thanks.
