I have had my contax 17-35mm in use with my canon 5d without any issues what so ever, however i bought a canon 5d mark ii during the december price cuts and used a 70-200mm ii for a couple of shots a 24mm 1.4 ii for about 65 shots and my contax 17-35mm for 6 or 7 shots during the contax shots the viewfinder went dark when i removed the lens the mirror was smashed in half vertically and loose inside the camera.I have less than 100 shots on the new camera, and its been used on 4 occasions
Has anyone had any issues using the contax 17-35mm with the Canon 5d mark ii.
Also now that i have the mark 11 will all my converted lenses work with video i have 70-300mm and 100mm my 70-300 firmware 1.10c and the 100mm firmware 2.09x my 17-35mm has firmware 3.00J
What are the benefits of upgrading the firmware ?

My condolence to your 5D mark II but sounds like it is within the warranty period and Canon will take care of it.

You asked 2 questions: 1, whether the Contax 17-35 has an issue with the 5D mark II, and 2, what are the benefits of a firmware upgrade.

For the first question, your Contax 17-35/2.8 is NEVER in physical contact with the mirror of your camera. From our Q&A web page http://conurus.com/contax/any-questions
Quote:

Are there mirror clearance problems with a converted Contax N-mount lens?
If the rear element does not protrude beyond the end of the lens mount, it is impossible for the mirror to hit the rear element of the lens. 7 out of the 9 lenses in the N-mount line-up satisfy this criteria.

The 24-85 has a plastic rear shroud which protrudes by a negligible amount, and the Planar 1,4/50 has a rear element that protrudes by 0.4mm. They will still clear the mirrors of 5D and 5D mark II without any mirror intereference issues. However, the Planar 1,4/50 may not physically fit on a Kenko/Tamron 1.4x teleconverter because of this rear-element protrusion.

So, as you can see, the rear element of the Contax 17-35 is completely recessed within the Canon EF bayonet mount and nothing protrudes. Therefore, it is impossible for the lens to ever have any physical contact with the mirror of the camera body.

For your second question, a list of changes for each firmware version since 3.00 can be reviewed here

http://conurus.com/forum/what-does-h-stand-for-in-the-internal-use-column-t557.html

In a nutshell, over the years, the firmware updates improves AF accuracy, adds AF microadjustment feature to the lens (which can be used in place of or in addition to the camera body's own) and adds direct aperture control in movie capture mode.

Thanks for your reply yes it is well within the warranty period and i took it in yesterday, i thought it could not be an issue with the lens as it works so well on the canon 5d just needed to check before it mounts back on the 5dii
Also thank you for the link on the firmware details i will update when i send in another lens
another question i have a couple of Contax N 50mm 1.4 lenses and i have not used them on my N1 in at least 2 years what are the signs to look for in a weak motor?
