I haven't purchased my 5D2 (yet) Smile

If you have one, let me know if your converted lenses continue to work. Thanks!

Any idea why 24-85 won't work with 5D MK2?

I have a 5D MK2 and just sent my 24-85 for conversion.

Hi Allan,

I hope you wouldn't mind we hold up your order while we investigate this problem.

We are pleased to know that the 85/1.4 and the Makro Sonnar 100/2.8 worked on the new camera. I think I know what serial number of the 24-85 reported to be not working is and in private communication gained a basic understanding of the symptoms. The reported problem was that the AF motor did not turn but the lens only functioned in manual focus mode.

Based on the preliminary information I conjecture that Canon may have lowered the lens voltage on the 5D mark II, below the threshold for the 24-85's ultrasonic motor's operation.

Please stay tuned while we are working on a solution. In the meantime, your help is greatly appreciated if you have the 5D mark II. Please report if your lens works, and if not, what the symptoms are.

Another customer tried his 24-85 on a 5D mk II:

Apparently for him the AF worked.

If you have the 5D2+24-85 combo please let us know! We need more data points to see if this is a one-off problem or a prevalent problem.

Jon,

Thank you very much for your input!

It may not be the camera after all, but the lens - in which case, this trick is sometimes helpful:

Manually focus to infinity, and continue to turn past infinity for one turn.

Manually focus to 0.5m, and continue to turn beyond 0.5m for one turn.

This procedure would help if the lubricant in the lens has dried up and cause the AF to stop working.

A local member has generously let me try on his sparkling new 5D mark II. We tried

Vario-Sonnar 24-85
Vario-Sonnar 17-35
Vario-Sonnar 70-300
Planar 50/1.4

These are lenses equipped with ultrasonic motors, and they all worked. Autofocus was very snappy, no difference from other Canon models. (The Planar was a very-limited, hand-made pre-production run.)

There is one 24-85 which does not work and we hope the current owner could contact us and have us look at the lens to see what has gone wrong. My intuition tells me there is a problem with the lens itself, with nothing to do with the camera. Hopefully there will be no further incidents, but we keep our fingers crossed and will closely monitor. If you try, let us know the results. Thanks!

Took your advice, and it seems to be working now on my bodies, and also used it today on the 2 5D MKII bodies I mentioned in the earlier post and it worked fine. Should the lens be sent in for re-lubricating ?

I have tried all of my converted lens with the new 5D Mark II. While I have not performed extensive testing of each lens, they all work properly with the new 5d. The converted lenses I tested were all converted by Conurus to the EOS system and include the 85/ 1.5, 100 makro, 17-35, 70-300 and the 24-85. Curtis
