I hear a click when I zoom in and out. Is this a problem with the lense ?
I just purchased it and need to know asap so I can return it. It feels like a cam or slipping gear or tooth of a gear missing or worn out. Thank you, rollsman

I don't hear a clicking on mine. The manual zoom in / zoom out movement is smooth, though a soft steady sound of the gears (?) moving can be heard. There is no slack in the movement at all.

I defer the real answer to Bo-Ming who has probably handled many dozens of this lens.

Hope you get the lens to where you want it. It is a fabulous piece of glass. A "keeper" if there ever was one.

When my lens's auto-focus toggles back and forth rapidly, sometimes I hear a sound.

I just tried three different 17-35's, zooming back and forth between 35 and 17. Two of them made no noises at all, but one of them made a tiny little "click" at around 32mm. But it was so tiny that if you had not posted this question, I would not have noticed it at all.

There should not be any more than the faintest noises or uneveness while zooming. That said, the 17-35 is a very complex design, with different lens groups moving in different directions depending on focusing and zooming, guided by an array of rollers riding in a set of precision machined helicoils. Also, due to the fact that the helicoils I mentioned are metal, they tend to be a tad noisier than their plastic equivalents of other makes.

Thank you Bo Ming for your response. I tried the lense and it works fine.I have to see if this will serve my purpose. I will try it out on a few of my weddings and if it does not suit my purpose I will consider selling it. I have a 24-70mm 2.8 L lense and I hate to lose the 70 for my portraits, But I will know in a few weeks. Thank you very much again, Dennis
I am waiting for my 70-200 to be converted. That zoom range I will need. Thanks, Dennis
